WHAT'S NEW
New Terminator II Insecticide Ear Tag Now Available
Terminator II - a 20% diazinon insecticide ear tag - is now available to
the U.S. beef and dairy cattle industry especially in regions where fly
pressure is an economic concern and where pyrethroid-resistant horn flies
are a production problem. The new tag, designed to provide economical, long-lasting
horn fly control, gives producers quick-kill effectiveness against horn
flies. While horn fly resistance to pyrethroid tags and products is rising,
field trials and studies have shown that horn flies are particularly susceptible
to diazinon.
Terminator II also aids in the control of most fly species - face flies, stable flies, house flies as well as lice - and protects against a broad spectrum of insects afflicting pasture and range cattle for 3 months, and up to 5 months if two tags are used, eliminating expensive, labor intensive retagging midway through the fly season. Terminator II is labeled for use on beef and non-lactating dairy cows.
KMG Open For Business in Latin America
As part of its strategy to become a global supplier of value-added insecticides and crop protection products, the Animal Health Division of KMG Chemicals entered Latin America early this year and is marketing its popular, effective diazinon cattle ear tags, Patriot and Terminator II. Headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia, KMG's Latin American operations will be headed by Juan Emilio Acosta a well-known insect control specialist who has served South American and Latin American cattle and dairy producers for over 25 years.
With more than 310 million head of cattle, the South American beef and dairy cattle industry is the world's largest - almost three times the size of the next biggest cattle producing region in the world. But it faces unique challenges, particularly from horn flies that have plagued herds and producers for 20 years. Because of continual rainfall, equatorial cattle raising areas in the northern part of the continent experience yearlong fly seasons, and now cattle producers are seeing dramatically increasing incidence of horn fly resistance to pesticides, especially pyrethroids.
The size, dynamism and dominance of the Latin American markets puts strong demands on suppliers, and KMG Animal Health is proving equal to the task. In the coming months KMG will be making its expanded line of insecticidal ear tags, oral larvicides and dust and liquid formulations available to cattle and dairy producers in Latin America.
Avenger™ Keeps Flies on the Run
Beef and dairy cattle producers have learned that simply tagging cattle with insecticide ear tags is not an enduring remedy. Horn flies continue to develop resistance to pyrethroids and even to organophosphates, the most common chemical classes used in ear tags - until last year when KMG introduced AVENGERT. The most significant insecticide cattle ear tag development in the last 20 years, Avenger utilizes endosulfan, an organochlorine chemical compound never before used in animal health.
Results from the most grueling, comprehensive cattle ear tag field trial ever conducted are in, and they show conclusively that Avenger with its Ectoran® Technology provided more than five months of horn fly protection, almost two months longer than other products. During the trial pressures per head averaged more than 1,200 horn flies, and in many cases reached 2,000. Generally, fly pressures of 200 per head are considered to have an economic impact. The five-month field trial pitted Avenger against all of the industry's popular ear tag products, and involved ten herds (between 26 and 40 head) in southwest Texas, which was experiencing its worst fly seasons on record in 2007. The cattle carried two tags per head.
After 20 weeks, Avenger was still controlling flies at a rate of more than 90%. Beyond five months, Avenger was still controlling flies at a 60% rate. By contrast the effectiveness of the other tags fell off precipitously after 13 weeks, providing no more than 50% control at that point. At the 20-week mark, all other challengers were at 0% control.
